Sunday June 14, 1998

..."I did not come here for myself, I came here to ask you to work for Lebanon's freedom."

The landing at Melbourne airport happened in an extremely emotional atmosphere, where most of the people waiting there had tears in their eyes when welcoming their beloved guest. One young man when asked if he knew General Aoun answered: "I entered the army and served under his command and I knew him well. It doesn't matter if they lie about him, I know his integrity, loyalty to his country and his compassion towards the people".

At 3:30 PM on Saturday 12th July 98 the plane carrying General Aoun landed in Melbourne airport. General Aoun and the party travelling with him were invited to the honor guest hall under the heavy protection of the federal police where he was greeted by the welcoming commitee.

After that he went out to meet the people. This is when applause and heartly greetings were heard very loudly: Rajeh yit ammar Libnan, Aounak jayi min Allah... Big signs both in arabic and english were held up high, welcoming the beloved guest. It was really a very touching moment filled with truthfullness, love, friendship and patriotism...

After that, General Aoun visited the Memorial Site of the Anonymous Fighter where he was given the tour and was explained the meaning of the architectural monument among which is the perfect timing that lets the sun sparkle over this monument every 11th of November to show scriptures that say: "What greater love is there than the one that lets a person give his life for the ones he love". It is also a fact that a Lebanese architect Aziz Iskandar Haddad helped build this monument. General Aoun put a large bouquet of roses forming the Lebanese flag on that site and was saluted by the national guards of the monument.

The meeting with the people took place in a large hall in the city and lasted until midnight. People left with their hearts filled with overwhelming emotions due to the General's arrival among them.
