THE SYRIAN ETHNIC CLEANSING
OF LEBANON, YEAR 1999

Written By A Lebanese Freedom Fighter

Henry Kissinger's vision of Peace following the 1973 Yom Kippor war has been centered on the destruction of Lebanon. To destabilize it, rob it of its sovereignty, and replace its state with a consciousless regime of collaborators who will rubber stamp what's left of the country as consolation prizes to the other parties of the Middle East. Smiling Syrian foreign minister Khaddam and US secretary of State Kissinger concluded an agreement that resulted in 27 years of US support for the Syrian Dictatorship of Hafez Assad. The final goals consisted of destroying/taming the Palestinian rejectionist fronts, then settling a pacified Palestinian population along a pacified and destitute Lebanese population in Lebanon. The plan was simple, the ME had one more people and one less state. By dividing and conquering Lebanon, final solutions for the Palestinian problem could be passed at no cost to Israel. Syrian interests of domination of Lebanon converged with the Israeli interest of settling the Palestinians of Diaspora. An alliance of evil started with US benediction.

By 1990, and after 15 years of bombardment, Syria finalized its occupation of Lebanon, and a new stage of the plan started. The Syrian occupation regimes impoverished the once thriving Lebanese, forcing many to sell their lands in order to put food on the table. They strangled our liberties, wiretapped our phones, and planted intelligence operatives in every street, every town, every association and almost every business to force us to remain quite. They practiced assassination, kidnapping, arrests, intimidation, and torture to stifle our resistance and bring us in line with the "Greater Syria" (like greater Serbia) domination plan. Syrian-supported warlords and politicians imported and buried toxic waste in our lands, poisoned our air and waters, causing cancer and diseases to spread widely to force us out of our homeland and to kill us slowly where their policies of hunger could not. The Syrian dictatorship has also diluted our identity by nationalizing hundreds of thousands of Syrians and Palestinians who have no allegiance to Lebanon. Syria is committing the Ethnic cleaning of the Lebanese people without discrimination, and in every aspect; ethnic, social, economic, cultural, legal, and ecological. Unlike Bosnia, and Kosovo, the genocide of the Lebanese proceeds slowly but quietly and surely, and without the fanfare of TV cameras. From every perspective, the plan for the destruction of Lebanon is working. Wherever you look in Lebanon today, you see widespread poverty, a barren economic land, a bankrupt economy and an omnipresent police state ruling with the aide of Syrian-trained secret services and 40,000 Syrian occupation troops.

At the doorstep of the 21st century, the Syrian pillage of Lebanon continues unabated. The Syrian-appointed Hariri-Lahoud puppet regimes have bankrupted the country and saddled it with a $25 billion debt, 37% larger than its total GNP. This week, respected financial sources including Banque Audi, Fransabank, and Bank of Beirut for the Arab Countries, reported that the GDP growth in Lebanon has fallen to minus 2 percent in the first half of the year. This is not recession but actual shrinking of the economy, meanwhile 1.5 million illegal Syrian workers have stolen jobs and opportunities causing the Lebanese unemployment rate to reach 40% of the labor force. Since 1990, Syrian imposed economic treaties have bankrupted whole industries and caused the shutdown of thousands of Lebanese businesses. International investment has been anemic and weary of the occupation regime's corruption. A spirit of lawlessness prevails. No wonder, the Lebanese Diaspora, $40 billion strong, has consistently stayed away from investing in Lebanon despite all the propaganda marketed by the Syrian Mafia and its claim that peace has returned to Lebanon. These claims are traps to lure investors into a lawless land but few have been fooled. The number of tourists visiting Lebanon this summer has dropped below that of last year. The balance of payment has been negative for many months now, and is starting to resemble the chronic trade deficit. The Lebanese people's daily struggle has been lowered to basic subsistence, to weaken their resistance to the Syrian occupation and its implantation of the Palestinian refugees. A few dollars will be waived and will undoubtedly find their way into the pockets of the occupation regime officials and the Syrian ruling class.

Waves of strikes grip the country. Teachers, utility workers, and many more labor and professional bodies are striking intermittently. The social and economic crisis has reached intolerable levels and explosion is certain and forthcoming soon. The country is adrift, with no representative government or parliament, no independent judiciary, no free Press, no sovereign economic policy but heavy taxation, no foreign policy, no social policy, no immigration policy, no security policy, no respect for the basic human rights of the people, and with totally open borders.

The entire masquerade that peace has been accomplished in Lebanon since 1990 is now being uncovered and the truth is on the ground, in the open, for all to see. The on-going war against Lebanon conducted by Syria and Israel continues under the silent eyes of the United States of America. Society cannot achieve progress when Evil sits at its top and imposes a government based on falsehood, lies, theft of public funds, and betrayal of the national aspirations of the people. The Lebanese people resisted for 24 years and continue to resist the Syrian occupation of our land. The struggle shall however take another form very, very soon. Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. The explosion is certain. Revolution is here.
